What's causing this cat's respiratory problems?

A 3-year-old male calico cat is presented for evaluation of increased respiratory effort. A physical examination reveals poor a body condition, pulmonary crackles, and bilateral nasal discharge. The cat lives in a household with four other cats. All the cats spend much of each day outside, as long as weather permits. Smears of the nasal discharge are air-dried and stained with Wright's-Giemsa stain (50X [inset = 100X).
