Like many veterinary clinics, we have a lot of staff turnover. So in an effort to continually educate our staff, some of whom
have little medical knowledge initially, my colleagues and I instituted a word-of-the-week challenge. Staff members suggest
a topic or theme weekly, and it is written on a dry-erase board in the pharmacy. Then at our monthly staff meetings, we conduct
a friendly, self-graded word-of-the-week quiz, which stimulates additional questions and discussion. The staff has become
more knowledgeable on many aspects of the veterinary profession and more resourceful in finding information. They seem to
appreciate the effort we make in helping them understand how and why we do the things we do.
