To keep track of surgical instrument replacement and tuning, we post a list just inside the door of the surgery room. When a surgeon identifies an instrument in need of attention, a staff member immediately writes it on the list. After the surgeon is finished with the instrument pack, a technician labels the instrument with colored tape to identify it. I check the list and order replacements or send off the instruments for tuning. I then write on the list the status of instruments on order or being repaired to keep everyone in the loop.
