ClinQuiz: Fast tick facts, answer 2C

VETERINARY MEDICINE SUPPLEMENT

2) C–Correct.

Although there is a delay in transmission of B. burgdorferi from ticks to animals, some studies indicate that the agents of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and of anaplasmosis may transmit infection less than 24 hours after attachment. 6-8 The attachment time required to transmit Ehrlichia species has not been clearly established. 9 When it comes to preventing tick-borne diseases, using a repellent, checking everyone, including pets, frequently when in tick-infested areas (every one to three hours), maintaining pets year-round on an acaricide, and removing ticks as soon as they are detected are the safest course of action.
