You don't have to be a specialist to use ultrasound

Expert status isn’t a requisite for getting most of the diagnostic information you need, says imaging specialist Dr. Rachel Pollard.

Veterinarians are notoriously driven individuals who master countless systems, tools and procedures throughout the clinic. But, of course, no one can be a wizard at every task—a fact that is vexing to some practitioners.

For example, Fetch dvm360 conference speaker Rachel Pollard, DVM, PhD, DACVR, says she often sees veterinarians become frustrated by performing ultrasound because they expect to be able to function with the same proficiency as their specialist colleagues. According to Dr. Pollard, this unfair fixation doesn’t do DVMs any favors, but those who can cut themselves some slack and focus on what they can do have the right idea.

"They're able to make the bulk of the really relevant diagnoses without feeling like they have to be able to perform at a specialist's level," she says.
