Be a new veterinarian’s training wheels
In this excerpt from his "Your Veterinary Voice" podcast, Dave Nicol, BVMS, discusses his biggest fear for the future of veterinary medicine—namely, the loss of young talent due to burnout. According to Nicol, too many young and talented DVMs, when slapped with the realities of student debt and unsupportive colleagues, think they’ve made a mistake by following their dreams. He likens the experience to learning to ride a bike without training wheels. Is it any wonder so many people end up crashing and burning?
But Nicol doesn’t just point out a problem without offering a solution/challenge: Be a new veterinarian’s training wheels. In other words, invest time and energy into protecting, supporting and developing veterinary medicine’s fresh faces while they get their balance. If we all did that, he dreams, talent would remain in the industry and recruiting would be much easier.
